High School and Beyond Plan not completed by 60% of Eastlake students

“What they do is they hold your cap and gown. They hold your actual diploma and transcript.”

On Thursday, 01/05/23, in an interview, High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) Coordinator Mr. Tyshawn Ward explained all about Eastlake’s required High School and Beyond Plan.

“I’ve had tons of students come to my office, and they’re, like, “I don’t know what I want to do.”

According to Mr. Ward, only an approximate 40% of Eastlake’s student body has completed the HSBP (as of 01/05/23); regardless of it being both a graduation and state requirement.

“Students are busy; they’ve got clubs, they’ve got this, they’ve got that . . . [the High School and Beyond Plan] is here. We have to do it.”

In short, the HSBP is a five-component assortment of tasks divided and assigned throughout Eastlake students’ four years of schooling – regardless of if a given student splits time with Running Start (or any other similar program) or has transferred to Eastlake midway through their high school education.

“If the student does it right, it will actually help them figure out what they want to do in college; if it’s apprenticeship, tak[ing] a gap year, whatever it is.”

The five components, available on the online resource Xello, are as follows: the Four-Year Planner, a personality quiz, twelve total Core Lessons (three per year), the creation of a resume, and the obtaining of information about post-secondary financial aid.

“On Xello, it has a whole bunch of careers and a whole bunch of things that you can click in. It tells you how much [a given career] makes, what you need to go to school, how long you need to school to go to school to do [a given career].”

In addition, Mr. Ward warns of what will happen should a student not complete the HSBP come graduation.

“What they do is they hold your cap and gown. They hold your actual diploma and transcript.”

The HSBP is on Xello, where progress toward completion can also be viewed. Xello can be accessed via “login.xello.world” or through Classlink at “launchpad.classlink.com/lwsd”. A thorough explanation of the HSBP is available on Eastlake High School’s website “ehs.lwsd.org” on the “High School and Beyond Plan” page under the “Counseling” tab.

Any further questions or concerns about the HSBP should be directed to Mr. Ward at [email protected] or in his office at the College and Career Center offices (C236).
