February 14th is Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day. This Holiday is celebrated annually, and all around the world people show their love and appreciation for each other. Whether it’s a bouquet of flowers or some kind words, Valentine’s Day is a chance to show those you love just how much they mean to you.
To spread the love around our community we asked students and staff who they love and appreciate around Eastlake. Then we went and found that person that they mentioned and told them that someone loved and appreciated them. We continued to do this and created a “Chain of Love”. People’s faces often lit up and students mentioned how it made them happy and valued by their community.
But what happens when someone says that they love or appreciate you? Is there a scientific reason behind the joy we feel? We found that when someone we value says that they love and appreciate us our bodies send out a flood of hormones like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. These hormones are also known as happy hormones as they are a key factor in a person’s happiness. These words chemically change how a person feels. It may seem small but simply telling someone that they are valued and loved is an important step in building and strengthening our community.
