Eastlake vending machines: why do they cost so much?

SAMMAMISH- If you are a student at Eastlake High School, you may have used or attempted to use the school’s vending machines; and if you have used them this school year, you may have noticed what seems like some unreasonably high prices.

Prices of snacks in the vending machines at Eastlake range from 2$-3.50$, while drinks range from 1.75$-4$. Hefty prices can turn out to be quite a load, as a single snack and drink combo can cost up to 7.50$.

You may wonder where all this money is going. According to sources at Eastlake, the newer vending machines at school take a small fee for debit/credit card processing, which takes up only a small amount of the prices, while the rest of the proceedings go towards the staff scholarship. The staff scholarship grants around 1,000 dollars to a senior at graduation whom is voted on by staff to have represented “the heart and values of Eastlake”.

In conclusion, the money you or your friends spend at the vending machines eventually end up in the pockets of a member of Eastlake’s senior class, but fear not, as that person is one of high credibility. The combination of the high prices and where the proceeds go can leave you wondering: are the vending machine prices worth it?
